FS 1302 Snow Run

Unread post by Livin4Today » Sun Jan 03, 2016 1:51 pm

RattleSnake 4x4s' First Run of 2016

Well we pulled it off leaving the Kennewick Home Depot parking lot at 0915 with 4 Jeeps(much to Scumby's chagrin) and hit I-82 wb, picking up Irish along the way. It was a relatively normal ride cruising at about 65 mph, and only being hazed (flipped off) by one driver, yes road rage is still alive and well in WA. Got a call from our good friend Merrick G. who unfortunately couldn't join us, letting us know we'd be up against the same sugary snow that 3 years prior had halted our assault (assault - it's just a cool word, we did not harm the mountain), on the trail. Merrick said it may be futile to try, but we both knew it would be a fun day above the clouds, in the sun and snow. Making Naches by 11 was a goal we met, and everybody grabbed gas and goodies, while I checked in with some invited guests, I had Eric M form Midnite Mudders on the phone and was chatting Greg W, in the parking lot. Greg had some mechanical issues and Eric was still inbound from E-burg, but said not to wait, he'd get Greg on his way through. Then I hurried over to get gas and stop holding up the show.

The players for the day:
Livin4Today - Lance
Pixel - Mandi
BryansFab - Bryan/Christie
Scumby - Al/Stacy
Irish - Mike/Tina
Wrongway - Bill/Tammie
Oddball - Curtis

And we arrived at the entrance of FS 1302 right before noon, pulling in far enough so that we could air down, after weaving through some other users tow pigs and trailers left hanging out in the road. Stacy strapped on some snow shoes and decided to break trail out ahead. My norm is if I'm dropping pressure I do it serious to like 6 lbs, but for some reason I only dropped to 10 (bad choice that I'd later pay for and be dropping again). We made it to the top by 12:30 ish, with Eric arriving at the base at the same time, and another guest from Packwood, Andrew had missed his last gas stop, and chose to continue into Naches to fuel-up, also choosing to skip the run to not hold everyone up, Greg couldn't resolve his mechanical issues and pointed for home. The ride up was a little snotty, but all made it with no problems. However, we should've grabbed Stacy on the way up, so Al had to run part way down to get her, while we started pushing our way west breaking trail. Even though we knew another jeep had gone up just as we arrived, the going wasn't easy, as Merrick had suggested, I found a deep hole within 5 mins and needed a tug out. It was tough going at best, we found the other Jeep and crew up the trail fixing a radiator issue, members of the Shindig Wheelers. We chatted a bit and then made our way around them to finish what they had started.

Or so we thought, we had our first big slow down on the hill not 20 feet from where they stopped to wait for their broken buddy. But with some perseverance by myself, BryanFab and a couple of others we were slowly pulling away (slowly might be "too fast" of an adverb), maybe inching would better describe our movement. We spent 4.5 hours up top and made it about 7 miles in, not even making the first open summit that was a mud bog last year. So our group pic would be a click or two below that in the trees, even though Eric had pushed/winched up to the highest point, we all decided to backtrack 50 yards to light a small victory bon-log (hard to say bon-fire when it's only one log). Eric had brought with him a cool log he had prepped earlier with a chainsaw that worked out pretty neat. After gathering around the fire in 10 degrees and sharing the days events as each saw them we decided it was time to head down. It's now 4:30 and we have 7 miles of snowy trail to retrace. For any who have yet to play in deep snow, it's alot like Disneyland's Autopia, you bob from side to side but your stuck in the tracks. As we started our decent another of Eric's friends made it up to greet us, then we proceeded down to the bottom to air up and head home. However, both Scumby and I had compressor issues forcing Bryan and I to hobble into Naches for air. After air, we headed east for home with WrongWay, BryansFab, Pixel, and I stopping for dinner at El Porton in Zillah. Then it was straight to the house arriving safely home by 9:00 pm...

Pic & Vids to follow!

Building a capable off roader is relatively easy, building a street legal rig that you can wheel and then drive daily is a challenge...

Alright already here are the stills, in video format... :P

And if you are just a bit more patient, Clairese... :o
You might enjoy the ride up the hill as caught on film by our very own Pixel (Livin4Today Photography), I helped by adding some dash cam footage.

Here's the downhill stuff, it's as long as the other one, but hey I'm just not any good on a cutting room floor. I feel like the whole story should be told...
